Google has a helpful wizard to walk you through setting up a new project, linking a billing account, and creating your first API Key.
Before you do anything, confirm that you're logged in to the right Google account by clicking the user profile circle in the top-right corner. Then click the Get Started button in the upper-right to launch the GMP wizard.
The first screen prompts you to select the APIs to enable: Maps, Routes, and/or Places. Refer to Google's documentation to see which products are included in these categories.
The next screen prompts you to Select or create a project. Select +Create a new project from the drop-down.
Then Enter new project name to identify your new project. Make the name meaningful, something you'll recognize when you see the name on usage reports and billing invoices.
Link Billing Account
The final prompt is to link a billing account. Select your Enterprise Billing Account from the Choose an account drop-down—it will be named [Your Company] - Enterprise Billing Account - Woolpert. (If you only have access to one billing account, it may be pre-selected for you.)
If you do not see your Enterprise Billing Account listed, contact your Woolpert account manager or submit a support request.
After completing the wizard, you'll be directed to your newly created project in Cloud Console. Google will automatically enable the APIs your selected on the first screen for you. It may take a few minutes to complete.
New API Key
When the wizard completes, you'll be presented with a new API Key, ready to paste into your code and start developing.
This API Key can also be found on the Credentials page in Cloud Console ( > APIs and Services > Credentials). The Credentials page is also where you can create more API Keys if needed.
⚠️ The new API Key will initially be unrestricted—meaning it can be used in any environment. This is makes it easy to get started, but is not recommended. Before you deploy your application, make sure you restrict your key to prevent unauthorized use.
