Google makes it extremely easy to get started with Maps Platform usage. They've streamlined the key creation and restriction process so you can be up and running in mere minutes. But with that comes with a need to monitor those APIs and ensure you know where your usage is coming from. Google created a 'Metrics' tab in your GMP space to allow you to do this! Usage reports show the number of requests made to Maps Platform APIs. All Google Maps Platform usage for the past 30 days is available in Google Cloud Console. This report can be configured to present usage at the following levels:
- Credential (API Key or Client ID)
- API
- API Method (HTTP or JavaScript)
- Domain (Frontend only - list all website URLs incurring API usage)
To look at that usage, log into your cloud console, then open your Google Maps Platform product section.
From there, click the Metrics tab on the left hand side.
From here, you have visibility to all APIs that have been used in the GMP suite over different date ranges. Want to look at a specific API? Select it from the drop down.
Want to refine the results further? Click the Show Filters button in the top right for the filters slide out to show on the right.
From here, you can refine the current metrics as well, like how they are grouped by, what credentials are shown, etc.
After looking at all of this data, do you want or need to look at a deeper view of this? Google has this built as well!!
Click on the Explore Data button and this will open up the ability to write a custom query to get exactly what you're looking for. You can use query builder for help identifying what's available...or if you're advanced...you can flip to MQL and write your own query.
If you've created a query that returns the data you're looking for and want to keep it, you can click the Save to Dashboard button in the top right and it will add this to your Metrics landing page.
If you're interested in a usage report at the URL level (relevant only to web applications), you have two options:
Maps Platform Metrics page
The Maps Platform Metrics page report by Domain can provide usage at the frontend, website URL level.
If you need more than 30 days of usage, you can request for one-time courtesy Domain usage report from Google.
Request a Domain report from Google support
Submit a support request for a special Domain report at Google Maps > Platform > Support page in Cloud Console. The submitter must have the Tech Support Editor role.
Complete all required fields and provide the following details:
- Subject: "Request: Domain usage report"
-
Issue Description:
- Project Name and Project ID: retrieve this from Home > Dashboard page.
- API Key/s to include in the report.
Google will provide up to 60 days usage history. The report will provide daily usage counts by URL, API Key, and Google Maps Platform product (API). We recommend that a Project Owner submit the request to expedite Google's security verification. You can also have our team submit this request on your behalf. Refer to Grant Woolpert project access to confirm our team has the right access to do so.
